Regular events in Ljubojno - Ilinden

02-08-2020

This holiday in Ljubojno is celebrated as a religious holiday and as a modern manifestation of the cycle of "emigrant meetings". The celebration begins on August 1 with cultural events such as book promotions and monographs for village folk groups paraded through the village and music. On the morning of August 2, the villagers go to the church of St. Ilija where they light candles, and later in the day all the houses in the village are open for guests who come for a "visit". The village is one of the burnt places in Prespa during the Ilinden Uprising, an event that is marked by the laying of fresh flowers on the memorial plaques of those killed in the Ilinden Uprising and in the Second World War.

On the evening of August 2, in the village of Polena (middle of the village), a big folk party is organized, where cultural and artistic societies, top Macedonian folk and pop stars are guests. This part of the celebration is the most massive and according to Ljubanci, between two and three thousand visitors gather. The local NGO for tourism development also organizes the sale of promotional material from Ljubojno (aprons, hats ...) and sweet and home-made pastries are sold on specially placed stands. For Ljubanci, Ilinden is the "biggest day" of the year and everyone tries hard to be present in the village, no matter where they live in the world.
