Ezarani

Ezerani Nature Park (Category IV, according to IUCN with a total area of 1917 hectares) covers the northern coastal part of Lake Prespa along with part of the swamp ecosystems near the shore (commonly called “Ezerani”, after the village whose area occupies a large part of the area), as part of Lake Prespa, is an important area nationally, regionally, but also in European and world context. Ezerani was declared a Strict Nature Reserve (SPR) in 1996 by the Assembly of the Republic of Macedonia with the Law on declaring the ornithological site Ezerani on Lake Prespa a strict nature reserve (“Official Gazette of RM” No. 37/96). The area was re-declared with the Law on declaring the site Ezerani on Lake Prespa a Nature Park on 17.02.2012, in accordance with the Law on Nature Protection.

NP Ezerani, in accordance with the Law on Proclamation, is managed by the Municipality of Resen.

The rich and relatively well-preserved biodiversity of NP Ezerani, especially in the context of the whole Lake Prespa, has significant characteristics at the world, European and regional level. This is reflected in the special status enjoyed by Lake Prespa (along with the Small Lake Prespa in neighboring countries – Greece and Albania) shown through its designation as an important area on various international lists.

NP Ezerani is a Ramsar site as part of Lake Prespa which has been declared a Ramsar Site of International Importance code 3MK001. Each country that has ratified the Ramsar Convention has a duty to designate at least one aquatic / swamp habitat that will be included in the List of Wet Habitats of International Importance – World Ramsar List, in accordance with the criteria of the Ramsar Convention.

NP Ezerani is part of the Important Bird Area (PPP) “Lake Prespa” MK006 (Important Bird Area – IBA, according to the world-accepted system of Birdlife International).

NP Ezerani is also part of the Important Plant Area (CAA) “Lake Prespa” (Important Plant Area – IPA, according to the world-accepted system of Plantlfe International).

According to the latest trends for valorization of areas important for biodiversity and according to the methodology proposed by IUCN, Prespa (in that context the site Ezerani) is also a Key Biodiversity Area (KBA).

NP Ezerani is identified as Emerald area and is included in the national Emerald network (MoEPP 2009) within the former Strict nature reserve “Ezerani”, in addition, it covers part of the Emerald area “Lake Prespa”.

The importance of NP Ezerani is very great in the region as well. Namely, NP Ezerani significantly contributes to the value of the entire Prespa region in terms of biodiversity. This value is recognized by the three countries that share Prespa as a result of which in 2000 a memorandum was signed by the Prime Ministers of Albania, Greece and Macedonia for the establishment of the Prespa Transboundary Park which covers the two natural Prespa Lakes (Great and Small Lake Prespa) together with their catchment area.
