St Elijah – Grnčari

To visit the well-known Monastery of St Elijah, head east from the village of Grnčari towards the slopes of Mount Baba. The dirt road can be driven in an off-road vehicle or walked. The 3 km walk up a moderate slope takes about 40 minutes.

The monastery complex consists of the church, the new lodgings, the refectory, the bread oven, the bell tower and the fountain with holy healing water. It is busiest at the church feast, on the evening of 1 August and the morning of 2 August, when believers come from across the wider region.

The Church of St Elijah is a small single-nave building with a three-sided apse on its east side. Inside are wall paintings from two periods. The first, older layer dates from the time the church was built, which scholars place in the first half of the 13th century. From these frescoes, a fragment of the Dormition of the Mother of God and the Transfiguration of Christ survive.

The later frescoes are post-Byzantine and carry several inscriptions in Old Church Slavonic.
