St George – Kurbinovo

The Church of St George is the main and only church of the Kurbinovo monastery. It stands above the village of Kurbinovo, on the slopes of Mount Baba, with a magnificent view of Lake Prespa. According to the inscription above the altar, it was built in 1191, during the reign of the Byzantine emperor Isaac II Angelos, and the painting of its walls began on 25 April that year.

At 17 metres long and 7 metres wide, it is the largest single-nave church in Macedonia. Outside it is modest, built mainly of stone, but inside it holds one of the most important sets of 12th-century frescoes. The paintings, the work of three unknown masters, have survived almost entirely. They stand out for their elongated, lively figures and intricate, almost transparent draperies, which give the interior a baroque splendour.

The best-known fresco is the Archangel Gabriel from the Annunciation on the east wall, the "Angel of Kurbinovo", which appears on the back of the 50-denar banknote. The altar area also shows the Mother of God between the archangels Michael and Gabriel, and Sts Cyril and Methodius.

The church is a protected cultural monument and has been on UNESCO's Tentative List since 2020. Between 2022 and 2025 its frescoes were conserved with support from Greece. A narrow asphalt road of about 3 km leads up from the village. Before your visit, ask in the village about the key.
